Kate Marmion Rides to Radiation

The best testimony of the Foundation's essential and unduplicated service is from a patient who used the service for her 30 radiation treatments. Sofia lives in Del Rio and learned in July that she had breast cancer. Her daughter, Maria, lives in California and has been with her mother to help with recovery and finding treatment options.

"I had surgery in September in San Antonio and needed to have radiation therapy, but it was impossible for me to have my treatments in San Antonio,” said Rodriguez. “My daughter researched to find treatment closer to Del Rio, and when she found out I could come to Uvalde for treatment, it was helpful. She then found out about the van service, and it was such a relief because I do not drive. My husband is 86, and it would be too hard for him to drive me every day to my treatment. My daughter rode with me in the van for my first two treatments, and now she has the peace of mind to return to California and her job because she knows that I am in good hands. I want to tell all those who give for this van service how thankful I am for them, and may God continue to bless this service."

Having radiation therapy in Uvalde eliminates the need for cancer patients to travel out of our area for treatments, reducing many burdens on patients and their families. Donors to Kate Marmion Rides to Radiation recognize that some patients in our vast nine-county service region also need a ride to their daily treatments.

Something as simple as a van service eases financial and logistical worries and provides patients independence at a time when they are most vulnerable. These are cancer patients who may not be able to afford to drive to daily appointments, don't have access to a reliable vehicle, or are fatigued, sick and often at risk of infection, making public transportation less than ideal.

There are significant costs in operating two vans on a daily basis and your gift covers those costs so patients can get on the road to fighting their cancer.

Your 100% tax-deductible gift will help fund the operating costs of two vans that each average 5,000 miles a month. Operating costs of fuel, repairs, tires, maintenance, insurance, van drivers' salaries and administrative costs.

It is the highest priority of the foundation board of directors to be good stewards of your gifts and to ensure that excellent service is provided efficiently and economically.
